Health & Nutrition

Khulisa Management Services offers extensive technical and monitoring and evaluation (M&E) capabilities across a range of health and nutrition technical areas:

  • HIV/AIDS and TB: Khulisa has been deeply involved in supporting HIV/AIDS and TB projects through a wide range of landscape analyses, operational research, data quality assessments, and evaluations of HIV and TB prevention and treatment programs. We’ve conducted projects related to mother-to-child transmission of HIV, antiretroviral therapy (ART) adherence, and TB in the mining sector. Our experience in these areas includes assessing program implementation, verifying data quality, recommending improvements in service delivery, and management to enhance health outcomes.
  • Nutrition:  Khulisa evaluates and supports the implementation of nutrition programs targeting vulnerable populations, including children under five. We have conducted population-based surveys, performance audits of program implementation, and evaluations of government nutrition interventions and programs. Our findings have informed policy and program adjustments, as seen in their impact on South Africa’s National Food and Nutrition Security Plan and Zambia’s Scaling Up Nutrition program.
  • Maternal and Child Health: Khulisa has contributed to improving maternal and child health access and service delivery through various M&E activities addressing barriers to effective program implementation and effectiveness. This includes participating in an evaluation of the operationalization of GAVI vaccination strategies, which assessed the effectiveness of policies and programmatic instruments to improve vaccine delivery in low-resource settings.
  • Health Systems Strengthening: In all our health and nutrition work, Khulisa contributes to strengthening various aspects of health systems, mainly health data systems. In particular, our work on the Eswatini Client Management Information System (CMIS) supported the Eswatini government to develop web-based dashboards, upgrade health data networks, and enhance data management systems critical for tracking patient histories and making informed health decisions.

Across these technical areas, we have applied a wide range M&E expertise, such as:

  • Capacity building to local partners and government institutions, such as training on M&E frameworks, data management, and the use of technology in health systems;
  • Data quality reviews (DQRs) and assessments, particularly in countries like Somalia, Mozambique, and Nigeria, which played a critical role in ensuring the accuracy and reliability of health data for program management;
  • Evaluation design and implementation, including complex, multi-country evaluations, formative assessments, and outcome or performance evaluations; and
  • Strategic advisory and knowledge sharing ,such as learning and knowledge exchange activities at national and subnational levels, contributions to the various national and regional evaluation associations, and the development of health-focused evaluation journals.

Khulisa’s capabilities in health and nutrition are marked by our comprehensive approach to M&E, a focus on improving health systems and health outcomes, and a commitment to building local capacity and informing policy.
