FNB PEP Evaluation

The FirstRand Foundation first entry into the primary education sector in South Africa was through the FNB Primary Education Programme (PEP). Tshikululu Social Investments, as the PEP programme stewards, commissioned Khulisa in 2012 to conduct a baseline school functionality assessment of 20 primary schools in two KwaZulu-Natal municipalities.

This was followed by a further contract of 20 primary schools in the Free State province in 2013. The assessments identified current intervention projects that were taking place in the schools and their surrounding communities. Khulisa used 50 indicators of school effectiveness at primary school level to determine the school functionality baseline.

In 2017, Khulisa evaluated the 37 programme schools of the 3-year PEP project against the baseline. The end-term evaluation findings was presented at the First Rand Foundation and Tshikululu Social Investments “CSI that Works” breakfast in October 2017 to education stakeholders, funders and government officials.
