Are you a Young and/or Emerging Evaluator (YEE) who is excited about the idea of providing innovative thinking in evaluation practice?
Would you value the opportunity to engage with experts in Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) and be part of a virtual learning and knowledge sharing platform?
Inspired by CLEAR-AA’s gLOCAL Evaluation Week, Khulisa will be hosting an Evaluation Design competition for YEEs in the second half of May with final presentation during the gLOCAL Evaluation Week (1-5 June 2020).
“The Covid-19 pandemic brings a wave of new thinking for evaluation globally. In the face of these many new challenges and opportunities, emergent evaluators must adapt and respond with innovation in evaluation practice. We are looking for these #eval shining stars,” said Khulisa Director, Jennifer Bisgard.
How will the competition work?
YEE participants from anywhere in the world will be randomly assigned to work in digital teams of three on a research design approach, choosing from three categories:
- A data mining/visualization exercise that uses existing data and is retrospective
- A forward-looking approach that includes strategies for future data mining
- A forward-looking approach that focusses on the development of an impact or quasi-experimental evaluation design
The design teams will have access to data and background information from Play Africa, a South African NGO and social enterprise dedicated to creating child-centred spaces and experiential learning activities.
Each team will be judged via an online Zoom or Skype meeting on the following:
- A brief summary of their approach
- A 10-minute presentation and
- A 10-minute response to judges’ questions
Do I qualify for this exciting opportunity?
Yes, if you:
- Are new to the evaluation field, or under the age of 35
- Have access to good internet connectivity
- Live anywhere in the world

What is a YEE?
Young and/or Emerging Evaluators (YEEs) is an acronym used in the evaluation community to refer to evaluators that are under the age of 35, new to field with less than five years’ experience, recent university graduates interested in evaluation, and development professionals wishing to become professional evaluators.
The program is spearheaded globally by EvalYouth, an EvalPartners’ initiative.
The African Young & Emerging Evaluators Network was launched at the 6th biennial South African Monitoring & Evaluation (SAMEA) Conference in 2017 by the African Evaluation Association (AfrEA).
