#EvalTuesdayTip: What is an evaluator? (and how to explain it to kids and clients!)

Home » #EvalTuesdayTip: What is an evaluator? (and how to explain it to kids and clients!)

Like all evaluators, I sometimes struggle to explain to my kids and relatives what I do for an evaluator.

This wonderful book, written by Roger Miranda (a skilled evaluator) and marvelously illustrated by Birgit Stadler, explains to Eva (his daughter) what he does. She listens and then jumps to conclusion that evaluators are like:

  • Doctors
  • Carpenters
  • School Counselors
  • Reporters
  • Scientists
  • Superheroes
  • Math Teachers
  • Judges
  • Detectives
  • Explorers
  • Adventurers

In each case, the author explains how being an evaluator is similar to each of these professions but still different.  In particular, he notes that above all, evaluations can be subject to “Miss Use” or misuse.

This matches the tongue-in-cheek nature of the book, where throughout there are plays on words or images (Wanted: R.E. Sultz) and the images of the Superheroes were of Michael Bamberger and Michael Quinn Patton.

If you would like to be read to, Michael Quinn Patton and his daughter Charmagne Campbell-Patton, have created a video where they read the book.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x7qRI2_b-C8
