#EvalTuesdayTip: Identifying Transgender and Other Gender Minorities in Surveys

We recently came across an excellent report by the Williams Institute at the UCLA School of Law, providing best practices for asking questions to identify transgender and other gender minorities in population-based surveys.

The report explains the importance of identifying transgender and other gender minorities in surveys and provides guidance on the best approaches for doing so. Suggested approaches include a “two-step” approach – asking respondents to identify their assigned sex at birth and their current gender identity in two separate items – or various single-item approaches when a two-step approach isn’t possible.

The report also outlines:

  • Suggested language for interviewers to use when asked about the definition of transgender;
  • Various ways to ask about LGBT identity; and
  • Additional considerations for age, race/ethnicity, socioeconomic status, and intersex status.
